Affiliate Reports: Make Top Placement Rankings Stable
Use explicit tie rules and complete exports to keep top-placement lists comparable across affiliate campaign reporting periods.

Why tied rankings need a rule
A top-placement table can change order even when the underlying values have not changed. If multiple placements share the ranking metric, an unspecified tie order can move rows into or out of a limited report. For performance marketing media buying, that creates distracting review work and can make a routine export look like a campaign change.
Define the metric before the sort
Write down the reporting period, currency, timezone, placement identifier, and primary metric. Distinguish approved commission from pending commission and revenue from profit. Specify whether the ranking uses full stored precision or rounded display values. A visual tie between two rounded numbers may not be a tie in the source data. Preserve enough precision for the intended comparison.
Add an explicit secondary key
For a reproducible report, sort first by the chosen metric and then by a stable placement identifier. State the direction of both sorts. A hypothetical table with three placements each producing 100 approved units can use identifier order to remain consistent between exports. This rule makes the presentation reproducible; it does not claim that the first identifier has better commercial potential.
Handle the cutoff deliberately
If a top-ten list ends inside a tie, choose whether to include all tied rows or use the secondary key to keep exactly ten. Label the decision. Do not describe an arbitrarily excluded tied placement as a lower performer. When comparing periods, retain the complete eligible placement set before applying the display limit, so a missing row can be distinguished from a genuine zero.
Check exports and pagination
A deterministic local sort cannot recover rows missing from the export. Confirm that the source includes the intended filters and complete period, and check whether a row limit or pagination removed eligible placements. Retain the raw public-safe reporting extract alongside the transformed table according to your organization's data handling rules. Compare row counts and unique identifiers before interpreting movement.
Use ranking changes as investigation prompts
When a placement moves, inspect the underlying metric change, approval timing, traffic volume, and campaign settings. Stable sorting removes one reporting ambiguity; it does not explain performance. Scaling CPS offers still requires valid economics and offer-specific permission. Present a concise methodology note with the table so advertisers and media buyers can reproduce the ordering without guessing.
