Affiliate Reporting: Why Rounded Commissions May Not Reconcile

A small difference between a transaction export and a commission statement does not always indicate a missing sale. The two reports may round monetary amounts at different stages. For affiliate teams reviewing ecommerce CPS and virtual-product campaigns, checking that calculation order is a useful reconciliation step. It is not a reason to dismiss unexplained differences.

Write down the calculation order

Identify whether each source displays rounded transaction values, retains additional precision internally or calculates the payable amount only after aggregation. A two-decimal display does not establish that the underlying calculation uses two decimals. Ask for the documented rule instead of reverse-engineering a contractual payout policy from a small sample.

Also identify the currency and relevant precision. This article's example uses a hypothetical currency reported to two decimal places. It should not be applied automatically to every currency, commission agreement or accounting system.

Work through a transparent example

Suppose three eligible transactions each produce an unrounded commission of 0.014 currency units. Under ordinary rounding to the nearest hundredth, each line becomes 0.01. Adding those displayed lines produces 0.03. Adding the unrounded values first produces 0.042, which rounds to 0.04. The one-cent difference comes from the stage at which rounding occurs.

Neither calculation alone tells you what an advertiser owes. The applicable agreement and documented statement method determine which amount should be used for settlement. The example simply demonstrates why a sum of displayed rows can differ from a displayed total even when the transaction set is identical.

Check other causes before assigning the difference

Match the reporting period, currency, order status and transaction population first. Fees, reversals, currency conversion and incomplete exports can also cause a mismatch. Do not label a residual as rounding merely because it is small. If an export includes only rounded values, the hidden precision usually cannot be reconstructed exactly from those values alone.

For a reproducible check, retain the source export unchanged and calculate a comparison in separate columns. Note the precision available in each source and the rounding method stated by the provider. Do not silently adjust one transaction to force the total to match.

Keep a visible reconciliation bridge

A practical worksheet can contain the displayed line sum, statement total, explained adjustments and unresolved remainder. In the hypothetical example, the displayed line sum is 0.03 and the statement total is 0.04. Only after confirming the underlying values and calculation policy would the 0.01 difference be classified as explained rounding.

For media buying analysis, keep that bridge separate from campaign performance claims. A reconciled commission total is one input to margin analysis; it does not establish that acquisition costs, refunds and other expenses have been fully accounted for. Use the appropriate settled amount for settlement reporting and label provisional amounts explicitly.

Escalate with the smallest useful evidence set

If the rule remains unclear, send the responsible reporting team the affected period, currency, relevant transaction references and both calculation sequences through an approved channel. Exclude unnecessary customer information. Request clarification of precision and rounding order rather than asserting that a report is wrong.

Keep unresolved differences visible until evidence explains them. Consistent arithmetic makes affiliate reporting easier to audit, while clear labels prevent a display convention from being mistaken for a verified payment discrepancy.
