Affiliate Reporting: Keep Scatterplot Axes Consistent Across Campaign Reviews
A practical scatterplot review method for media buyers comparing campaign snapshots without mistaking changing axis ranges for performance movement.
In performance marketing media buying, scatterplots can show how campaigns differ on two measures at once. Comparing two screenshots becomes unreliable when the axes silently change their ranges. A point can appear to move dramatically even when its underlying values barely change. This proposed reporting check helps affiliates keep visual comparisons tied to the actual numbers.
Specify the comparison before drawing it
State the unit represented by each point, the reporting period, and the definition of each measure. For example, a chart might compare spend with approved commission for each campaign. The approval basis and currency must be consistent. If the two snapshots use different maturity windows, explain that limitation before interpreting movement.
Keep campaign identifiers available in a companion table. Labels can be shortened in the plot for readability, but readers should still be able to trace a point to the same campaign across periods.
Inspect the axis endpoints
Record the minimum and maximum displayed on both axes for each snapshot. For a direct visual comparison, use a common range that contains both datasets when practical. Include units on the axes. If a transformed scale is used, label it clearly and use the same transformation in both panels.
Consider a hypothetical campaign whose spend remains 100 units. On an axis spanning 0 to 200, it sits halfway across the plot; on an axis spanning 0 to 1,000, it sits one tenth of the way across. The apparent movement comes from the display range, not the campaign. The source table resolves the ambiguity.
Handle distant points openly
A large campaign may compress the remaining points. Keep an overview showing the complete dataset and, if needed, add a clearly labeled detail panel with its own stated range. Do not silently remove the distant point to make the remaining cluster look more distinct. Explain any exclusions and retain the excluded records in the supporting table.
Review the exported artifact
Check the actual image or presentation sent to colleagues: axis labels and range notes can disappear during cropping. Compare several points against the source table and confirm that identifiers still match. Fixed axes make visual movement interpretable, but do not establish causation, profitability, or statistical significance.
Teams organizing affiliate media buying reviews can add the axis-range check to their reporting handoff. Its purpose is to prevent a presentation choice from being mistaken for a business result; budget decisions still require the underlying campaign evidence.
